Legal Office Administration - Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology

Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology: Legal Office Administration 42-week, 3-semester, Accelerated Legal Office Administration Diploma is a career-oriented program designed to ready students for employment, career advancement, or further educational opportunities in legal office administration. Students will be equipped 'with relevant administrative and high-level technological skills to meet the demands of the current and emerging legal office environment,' including 'a solid foundation of business office procedures and intermediate-level computer skills.' The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in a legal administration environment. These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate. The Program is delivered via 6 modules which progress 'through basic to advanced and specialized skill levels.' The Program's first 3 modules are common to the other office administration programs offered by Seneca and students are allowed to 'change specialization without interrupting their progress.' The remaining modules will 'specialize in Legal Office Administration with advanced technological skills,' including concentration in areas like corporate, estate, family, litigation, and real estate law. The student's ability to apply what he/she has learned to real-world situations is assisted by the Program's 'workplace simulations' of the various workplace environments he/she may face.

Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for entry-level positions in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, among others. The wide range of general office administration skills will also make the graduate a candidate for jobs in other office administration settings. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must have completed an 'Ontario Secondary School Diploma with a majority of senior credits at the College Preparation (C), University Preparation (U) or University/College Preparation (M) level or' apply via 'Mature Student Status (age 19 or older).' Applicants must also have successfully completed 'Grade 12 English: ENG4(C) or ENG4(U).' Applicants' respective grades in the 'pre-requisite English subjects (or their equivalents) will be used as a basis for selection of candidates.' Although not required for admission, applicants are encouraged to take 'Grade 12 Mathematics (MCT4C or MAP4C).'
