PROGRAM WEBSITE Legal and Corporate Administration - Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology's 1-year, 2-semester Legal and Corporate Administration certificate is a career-oriented program designed to ready students for employment or career advancement in legal office administration, particularly legal offices of large corporations. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills, including an 'introduction to the law and procedures,' that are 'applicable to large corporations.' The Program ' includes: an overview of the Canadian legal system; corporate, commercial and real estate law; commercial litigation; intellectual property; legal research; and training in corporate legal software.' The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in a legal administration environment. These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate. Students who have fulfilled all academic requirements will have the opportunity to apply and practice what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via 'a three to four week unpaid field placement at the end of the second semester.' To graduate, in addition to completing all academic requirements, students must to type at least 50 words per minute, and attaining this 'required level of proficiency' will be 'the responsibility of each student.' Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. The Program, however, is especially geared towards producing graduates who can compete for positions assisting 'in the corporate commercial transactions and procedures as carried out by law firms and corporate legal departments.' This 'work includes: the implementation of the legal and regulatory procedures required to maintain a corporation; tasks related to legal issues which arise in a corporate context, such as human resources matters, negotiation and interpretation of contracts, intellectual property; the negotiation, financing and completion of transactions such as mergers and acquisitions; and the issuance of shares, debentures and bonds.' However, graduates can also apply for positions in numerous other places like law firms, court registry offices, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, and real estate offices, among others. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record. Graduates can also further their studies at various colleges, universities, and institutes across Canada, often with advanced standing. To be eligible for admission into the Program, applicants must have completed an 'accredited University degree or College diploma or' apply via "mature student status." Mature applicants must, however, have 3 to 4 'years of documented work experience in a related field including references from relevant work experience.' All prospective students must also have proficiency in English sufficient for college-level studies. Students will be selected based on their respective 'English language, analytical and organizational skills,' and 'may be required to undergo testing to assess literacy skills.' While 'not required for admission,' applicants are advised to attain 'a high degree of computer literacy and' the ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
