Legal Office Administration - New Brunswick Community College

New Brunswick Community College's 30-credit Legal Office Administration program is a career-oriented program designed to ready students for employment, career advancement, or further educational opportunities in legal or general office administration. Students will be equipped with 'the broad range of skills required to perform administrative duties in a legal office environment,' including courses that 'focus on developing skills in software applications, communications, as well as understanding current administrative practices.' The focal point of the Program 'is on mastering new software packages, developing confidence in problem solving, selecting and interpreting data. Developing team member skills and personal qualities such as confidentiality, accuracy, professional ethics, and accountability are also emphasized.' Students will also have the opportunity to apply and practice what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via a 4-week work experience placement 'in a legal office environment.' To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must either have a secondary school diploma, Adult High School Diploma, or GED Diploma of High School Equivalency.

Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for entry-level positions in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, mortgage companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, 'or any other office where knowledge of legal terminology, legal forms, or legal office procedures is required.. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work.
