Legal Administrative Assistant Online (Certificate) - Capilano College

The Legal Administrative Assistant Online Certificate is a career-oriented program, delivered through distance/online education, designed to ready students for employment or career advancement in legal office administration. The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in a legal administration environment. These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate. Furthermore, students 'will receive training in administrative support with emphasis on legal terminology,' build upon their 'existing word processing skills in the legal procedural courses where transcription activities are included throughout,' and enhance their abilities in 'business English and human relations.' In total, to be awarded their certificates, students must successfully complete 10 legal courses and 3 'Online program courses - Business English, Human Relations, and Job Search.' Graduates 'will be ready to become a member of a law office team dealing in civil, corporate, family, or probate law or in conveyancing.'

The 'Program at Capilano College is part of BCcampus.' The latter 'is a collaboration of post-secondary institutions in British Columbia providing an online central access point to post-secondary online and distance learning courses, programs and resources.' Courses in the Program 'are taught by a group of instructors who teach for a number of the colleges in the provincial post-secondary education system;' and thus a courses may not necessarily be taught by a Capilano instructor and classes will often be comprised of students 'registered with the other colleges throughout the province.' However, upon successful completion of a course, students registered with Capilano College will have their final grade filed with the latter and subsequently posted to the learner's 'Student Record at Capilano.' The duration of courses will vary from 6 to 12 weeks, and students 'should expect to spend from four to ten hours per week reading online materials, working through assignments and communicating with' their 'classmates and instructor.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for entry-level positions in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, among others. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work. Credit earned in some courses may 'be transferred to other Applied Business Technology, Legal Administrative Assistant and Business Administration Programs' offered by the College.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must first be admitted to the College. The latter required that applicants have attained a British Columbia secondary school diploma, or equivalent. Prospective students 'who are 20 years of age or older' and do not have the aforementioned credential 'may apply as mature students.' International applicants whose primary language is not English will be required to demonstrate proof that they possess ability in English sufficient for college-level studies. Writing an English Language Proficiency examination, such as the TOEFL, or equivalent may provide this proof. Applicants to the College must indicate on their respective applications that they intend to register in the Legal Administrative Assistant Online Program. Applicants will first 'receive a confirmation number that indicates' their 'application has been received,' and within 2 weeks applicants will 'receive a Student Number.' Once the student has gotten the latter, he/she must contact the Program Coordinator for the Legal Administrative Assistant Online Program at 'lgao@capcollege.bc.ca to register for the online courses.'

To be able to register for courses in the Program students must first be registered with the BCcampus system. The latter is 'done by the Program Coordinator.' Once students are registered with the System, they will 'be sent a Registration Form in the mail which is to be completed and returned to the Program Coordinator along with a cheque or credit card authorization for payment of tuition and registration fee.' The latter will enable students to have access to their student record and transcript. Once the student's 'course registration has been processed' he/she will be able to access his/her 'account online to make' a payment.
