PROGRAM WEBSITE Hardwood Lumber Grader - Sir Sandford Fleming College The National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), founded in 1898, 'is a trade association comprised of companies and individuals that produce, sell and use North American hardwood lumber, or provide equipment, supplies or services to the hardwood industry.' The NHLA's purpose has been to establish a standardized 'system of grading rules for the measurement and inspection of hardwood lumber' and focuses on 'maintaining order, ethics and structure, assuring sustainable and available saw-timber to meet members' needs; and building positive relationships within the hardwood community.' Sir Sandford Fleming College's Hardwood Lumber Grader program, the only one of its kind in Canada, is designed to train students, 'with an emphasis on Canadian species' of lumber, in 'the rules for measurement and inspection of hardwoods developed by the' NHLA leading to Hardwood Lumber Inspector Certification. The Program will be delivered on 'a five-day per week format' and will include courses in Computer Applications and Technology in the Workplace, Kiln Operation, Lumber Species Identification, NHLA Application of Inspection Rules and Regulations, NHLA Grade Rules and Standards, and Role of the Hardwood Lumber Inspector. The Program will provide students with an opportunity to apply, practice, and enhance what they learn in the classroom within real-world situation via 'a 1 week, unpaid, field placement experience with an organization that is selected by the student and approved by the faculty member.' During the Placement, 'the student can apply existing knowledge and skills through observation and application in the mill environment,' and 'increased opportunities for timed board runs that meet production standards and expectation will be offered, enabling the student to assess and apply individual skill and aptitude in a professional setting.' Graduates of the Program will be equipped with the essential abilities 'to grade Hardwood Lumber, and the base of expertise needed to advance' their respective careers 'into other jobs in the industry. Graduates will qualify for positions such as mill lumber inspector, mill operator, mill and/or retail manager, retail/purchasing, and sales representative, among others. To qualify for admission to the Program, applicants will normally need to possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent. Prospective students that 'will be 19 years of age before the commencement of classes' and 'demonstrate potential for success in college studies,' may still apply and 'will be considered on an individual basis.' Mature applicants, however, must 'write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test.' Persons interested in employment as a Hardwood Lumber Grader or in other natural resources-related areas may 'also want to consider some of the diploma programs offered at Fleming's School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences.' The latter include Arboriculture, Ecosystem Management Technician/Technology, and Forestry Technician. Individuals who are interested in working with wood in general may consider programs and/or careers in areas like Carpentry, Cabinetmaking (Joinery), Millwork, Planermill, Refinishing, Wood Products and Manufacturing, and Woodworking.
