Forensic Investigative Studies Certificate Program - Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology

Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology, in partnership with the British Columbia Institute of Technology, offers the Forensic Investigative Studies Certificate Program , a unique flexible learning opportunity designed to enhance students' 'theoretical knowledge and investigative capabilities and gain a clear understanding of selected scientific principles, procedures and technologies and the legal issues involved in an investigator's work.' The Program's curriculum is specifically 'designed for investigators and students and is delivered by recognized experts in their respective fields, augmented in many cases by guest speakers and professors from B.C.I.T.' To graduate, students must successfully complete 10 courses, including 4 mandatory classes and 6 electives. The mandatory courses include Introduction to Criminal Law: Procedures and Evidence, Introduction to Forensic Science, Forensic Interviewing I, and Science, Technology and the Law. Electives may be chosen from Forensic Anthropology I - Rural Crime Scenes; Forensic Behavioural Science; Forensic Video Technologies; Geographic Profiling I; Forensic DNA Evidence for Investigators; Principles and Methods in Fingerprint Identification; and Wound and Blunt Force Trauma Assessment, Documentation and Evaluation. Students should be aware that 'police officers, graduates of Police Foundations, and of Law & Security Administration may apply for advanced standing credit for FHS561, Introduction to Criminal Law: Procedures and Evidence.' Advanced standing credit for other courses will be determined on a case by case basis, as requested by the student.

Forensics makes 'it possible to detect, investigate and prosecute offences that has never before been possible,' which 'has resulted in requirements for advanced skill development by investigators accompanied by higher standards set out by the courts.' Knowledge and skills in forensics can open up many career opportunities. It is possible for graduates to pursue specialized positions such as crime scene investigator and other specialized units, death investigator, domestic violence counselor, forensic laboratory technician, forensic photographer, forensic psychologist, police officer, provincial or federal investigator, public safety/law enforcement, and sexual assault examiner.

Students should note, however, that some positions may require further training and/or education beyond the scope of the Program. Also, because of the nature of the work, individuals with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in this field. Graduates of the Program may also pursue further students at B.C.I.T. 'advanced standing credits' towards the latter's Advanced Specialty Certificate (Forensic Science Studies) or Bachelor of Technology (Forensic Investigation).

To be eligible for admission to the Forensic Investigative Studies Certificate Program applicants must have a 'College or University diploma, degree, or certificate or' currently serving as a 'police officer or' have 'other current relevant work history (i.e., private/auxiliary police, corporate/government security and investigations, etc.) with a minimum of two (2) years experience.' Police or related applicants must, however, provide a 'letter of successful employment from' their respective 'Human Resources office (stating position title and years of service).' All non-police applicants must undergo a current Police Reference Check, at the applicant's expense.
