Fire Service: Evaluator Certification Program - Justice Institute of British Columbia

The Justice Institute of British Columbia's Fire Service Evaluator Certification Program provides standardized training for Fire Department and Regional Evaluators in accordance with existing professional standards of training and qualifications governing evaluators. These standards of training and qualifications have been established from 'input from a BC fire service focus group, and selected components from' the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1041, JIBC Fire and Safety Division policy, and International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). The Program has been 'designed to satisfy requirements of accrediting bodies, the Ministry of Advanced Education and the fire service,' and 'provides the Fire and Safety Division with a documented process by which evaluators are selected, trained and certified as either a Fire Department or Regional Evaluator.'

p>The focal point of the Program is a 2-day Evaluator Certification Workshop, which 'is offered as a Fire and Safety Division course' and builds 'on the skills and knowledge learned in Fire Service Instructor I and II.' Once the Workshop is completed, candidates will be evaluated by the Fire and Safety Division, which typically includes 'an application and interview;' and an examination. Although the Workshop is open to anyone interested in the position of Evaluator, o be eligible to be certified as a Fire Department or Regional Evaluator, candidates must be a member of a fire department 'currently using the Fire and Safety Division Fire Fighter programs,' 'be current or retired members of the fire department provided that they are fire department approved,' have attained at least '5 years of service, including 2 years experience as a fire service trainer,' and completed Fire Service Instructor I certification or Fire and Safety Division recognized equivalents. Fire Service Instructor II is strongly recommended.'

Each Workshop will have a 'minimum of 8 participants' and can be scheduled for any location in British Columbia 'provided that a minimum of 8 candidates are guaranteed, a classroom facility provided, and basic Firefighting equipment is available for use such as SCBA, ground ladders, fire hose, and ropes.' The final day to register for any workshop 'is 15 calendar days before' its scheduled start date. Candidates are responsible for providing all required 'proof of all minimum requirements at the time of registration.' To maintain their respective credentials, Evaluators will be required to 'take an online exam based upon' a 'mail-out package' and achieve a minimum score of 75 percent in 'order to maintain Evaluator Status for another 3 years.'
