Fire Training Certificate - College of the Rockies

Combining theoretical and practical education, the College of the Rockies' 2-year Criminal Justice Diploma is designed for students aspiring to attain employment, career advancement, skill upgrading, or further education and/or training in Criminal Justice or related fields. The Program provides students with a broad, primarily liberal arts-based education in criminal justice including courses in Computers, Criminology, English, Mathematics, Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology with options to take relevant classes in Business Administration, First Nations Studies, History, Political Science, Women's Studies. Moreover, students will acquire not only an understanding of criminal justice-relevant issues in Canada and the world but also the practical, academic skills required for the criminal justice field such as analytical reasoning, communication, critical thinking, and research. Students will also have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via a relatively short work experience placement of about 20 hours in duration designed to allow students to apply their 'understanding of criminal law to situations encountered in the day-to-day activities of a criminal justice professional.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue entry level positions, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related fields. Career-wise, graduates may be employed in various positions across Canada, including working for educational or governmental institutions or for employers in the non-profit or private sector. For example, graduates may work in the areas of administration, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, government, insurance, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, private and public investigation, the courts, victim services, and young offenders, to name but a few. Some careers, however, may require further training. Students should be aware, however, that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the Criminal Justice field.

Graduates can also take on further studies in the field at various institutions, colleges, and universities across Canada, often with advanced credit. For example, graduates can transfer 'into Simon Fraser University's Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology, or the University College of the Fraser Valley's Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice, or Royal Roads University's Degree in Justice Studies.' Students intending to transfer to a post-secondary institution upon graduation should consult with an Education Advisor at the College of the Rockies before apply to the Criminal Justice Diploma.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, 'applicants must have a C+ or better in English 12 and in Math 11, Principles or in Math 12, Applied, or their equivalent' and 'discuss their proposed program with a' College 'Educational Advisor.' Applicants may also 'be required to undergo a criminal records check to be filed with their application in the College's Registrar's office.' The latter is often needed 'in order to complete the' Program's work experience practicum as many employers will only hire students who have a clean criminal history. Furthermore, applicants with previous relevant work or educational experience may qualify for advanced credit for the Program through a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). Individuals intending to apply for PLA should consult with a PLA Coordinator located in Student Services.
