Red Cross Emergency & St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid/CPR - Carlton Trail Regional College - Humboldt Campus

First Aid is emergency medical treatment 'given to an injured or suddenly-ill person,' and, in some cases, animal, 'using readily available materials' until proper medical care is available. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an aspect of first aid providing 'artificial respiration and chest compression for a person without vital signs,' and is intended to maintain oxygenated blood flow to the brain and heart with the intent of quickly reviving the patient before brain damage, particularly permanent damage, or death occurs.

First Aid/CPR training and certification is required for most programs and careers in the criminal justice system, such as Firefighting, police, and related work. Carlton Trail Regional College at Humboldt offers 5 First Aid/CPR courses including Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR, Standard First Aid/CPR 'A,' St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid/CPR, and Red Cross First Aid/CPR Recertification, all of which are certified and recognized by Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), and a Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR, which is not recognized by OH&S.

All of the aforementioned courses, whether OH&S recognized or not, whether Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Standard, equips students with 'simple techniques for First Aid and CPR' as well as knowledge of 'safety and healthy lifestyle choices which are key to illness and injury prevention.' Students will also learn about Artificial Respiration (Adult), Choking (Adult), Emergency Scene Management, Severe Bleeding, Shock, and Unconsciousness and Fainting. There is no consensus among employers as to which one of the Standards, if any, is better and thus individuals can earn their respective credentials from either one equally unless specified by their employers and/or program.

The Red Cross First Aid/CPR Recertification, on the other hand, course is intended to retrain and recertify those who previously earned certification. The Canadian Red Cross suggests that individuals should be retrained and recertified in 'First Aid and CPR skills every three years.'
