Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice) - Douglas College

Dawson College's Social Science Program focussing on Law, Society, and Justice is an interdisciplinary university-transfer program, focussing on 'the relationship between law and society,' designed to prepare 'students for university studies in the social sciences, as well as law, education and administration.' Through courses in such disciplines as 'Anthropology, Biology, Business Administration, Classics, Economics, English, French, Geography, History, Humanities, Math, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religion and Sociology,' the Program provides participants 'with a broad social science background, while at the same time focusing on law-related issues' including 'impact of law on society' and vice versa.

More generally, the Program aims 'to develop in students the general abilities of analysis, communication, study and research, and wider awareness.' This includes acquainting 'students with the principal concepts and practices in the social science disciplines,' including 'the vocabulary of the social sciences,' equipping learners 'with the capacity to establish relationships between the principal elements and concepts of the social science disciplines,' and helping participants to 'develop an understanding of the scientific method and the objectives and current methods of social science research,' as well as to 'integrate the disciplinary knowledge into a coherent framework.'

The Program has been designed to appear to those with both a general interest 'in the various issues relating to the role of law in society' and those who have specific interests in pursuing career and educational opportunities in criminology, forensics, government, journalism, law, social work, and other related areas.

To be eligible for admission to the Program applicants must possess a 'Quebec Diploma of Secondary Studies (DES)' including 'Secondary V second language, Physical Science - Secondary IV (416), Mathematics - Secondary V (514 or 526 or 536) or Secondary IV (426 or 436), and History - Secondary IV.' Individuals 'with an academic background judged equivalent to the DES may also apply.' Prospective students should note that the Mathematics requirement for admission is currently under review and may change.
