Criminal Justice Diploma - College of the Rockies

College of the North Atlantic's 2-year Legal Office Administration diploma is a career-oriented program designed to ready students for employment, career advancement, or further educational opportunities in legal or general office administration. Students will be equipped with 'with extensive knowledge and skills in the formatting and production of legal and general documentation, legal terminology, legal transcription and office management tasks.' The Program includes courses in communications, computerized accounting and business applications, and organizational behaviour. The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in a legal administration environment. These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate.

Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for entry-level positions in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, among others. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work.

To be eligible for admission to the Program applicants must have completed a Comprehensive Arts and Science Certificate (College Transition program), Secondary Schooling (Grade 12), a Grade XI Certificate (Public Exams or equivalent), or Level 3 Adult Basic Education Graduation Certificate. Individuals without the aforementioned credentials but who are at least 19 years of age can apply via 'the Mature Student Clause.' The College advises mature applicants to acquire 'a good knowledge of English and Mathematics.'
