PROGRAM WEBSITE Court and Tribunal Agent - Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning Combining theoretical and practical education, Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning's 2-year Court and Tribunal Agent program provides students with the knowledge and skills required for a career as a court and tribunal agent/paralegal. The Program will especially focus on developing students' abilities in 'oral and written advocacy' and in 'all areas of permissible practice for agents' including 'offences court, provincial offences appeals, Small Claims Court, and tribunals such as the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal and the Workers Safety and Insurance Board.' Among the major topics to be covered by the Program are Administrative Tribunals and Public Law, Business Law, Case Law Research and Legal Writing, Civil Trial Procedures and Advocacy, Computer Skills and Software for Paralegals, Debtor and Creditor Law, Immigration Law, Ethics and Professional Practice for Paralegals, Evidence, Negotiation and Mediation, Principles of Legal Writing, Provincial Offences and Motor Vehicle Law, Real Estate Procedure, Small Claims Practice and Procedure, Sociology, Tenant Protection Law, the Canadian Legal System, and Torts and Contracts. During the second year of the Program students will be able to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via work experience placements in various 'law-related settings,' such as community legal clinics, courthouses, law and/or paralegal firms, and municipal prosecutions. For the work experience placement, students may be required to undergo, at their own expense, a criminal record check before being placed and/or employed; a clean criminal record is a pre-requisite for employment at many agencies and thus students with a criminal history may find it more difficult to complete the program and find program-related employment after graduation. Graduates of the Program may pursue employment, career advancement, or further education in various aspects of the paralegal field or related areas. Career-wise, graduates will be prepared for positions in places like administrative tribunals, Children's Aid Societies, community legal clinics, courts, government agencies, land registry offices, law firms, and legal departments of corporations, among others. Graduates will also be ready to be independent court and tribunal agents offering legally permissible services to lawyers and the public. Graduates can also further their education at various institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada often with advanced standing. To be eligible for admission to the Program, typical applicants should have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, including at least one Grade 12 English (C or U) course. Applicants who do not possess an OSSD or equivalent and who are 19 years of age older on the first day of classes can apply under "mature student status." The latter, however, 'must demonstrate their ability to work at the postsecondary level' by either 'successfully completing equivalency testing in English and/or mathematics or...a program of academic upgrading at a level appropriate to the program of choice." Furthermore, international students may be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language at a level sufficient to engage in studies at Sheridan; this may done in various ways such as writing an English language proficiency test like the TOEFL. The College advises students that, even though they are required for admission, to take 'Grade 12 mathematics or equivalent,' acquire 'basic computer skills,' and 'a minimum keyboarding speed of 30' words per minute as these skills will help learners' chances for success. Furthermore, the College encourages prospective students 'to research the Ontario paralegal profession before applying for admission,' such as The Law Society of Upper Canada website.'
