PROGRAM WEBSITE Court and Tribunal Agent - Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning The Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning's Bachelor of Applied Arts in Paralegal Studies, comprised of 8 semesters and 1 paid work term, is an unique multidisciplinary, skills training program in Canada that combines 'the theoretical underpinnings of the legal system with practical applications.' The Program is of particular interest to individuals aspiring to a career in the criminal justice or legal system, such as court monitor, immigration counsel, investigator, legal researcher, paralegal, paralegal firm manager, provincial offences prosecutor, or small claims court agent. Among the topics to be covered are Advocacy and Negotiations, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Courts and Tribunals, Laws, Legal History and Research, Microeconomics, Philosophy of Law, Psychology, Statistics for Paralegal Standards, Tax and Accounting for Paralegals, and the Canadian Legal System and Charter of Rights and Freedoms, among others. Students will engage in a paid 14-week work term 'from May to August after semester six.' While the College provides support, including 'working with business and industry to identify co-op employment opportunities,' students are responsible for finding their own job placement and are advised to participate in 'career management workshops to develop effective job search skills.' The Program is taught by professors who possess both a graduate degree and 'extensive practical experience in the legal field, and 'is endorsed by the Paralegal Society of Ontario, the Prosecutors' Association of Ontario, and the Ontario Association of Professional Searchers of Record.' Administrative boards and tribunals, courts, federal/provincial government departments, law and paralegal firms, and legal departments of corporations most commonly employ graduates. Students should also be aware, however, that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment as a paralegal as, because of the nature of the work performed, many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history. To be eligible for admission, applicants must possess an 'Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12U or U/C (M) courses, or six OACs, or equivalent, with at least a 65 per cent overall average' including 'Grade 12U English ENG4U or OAC English ENG0A1.' However, in cases where 'applicants are enrolled in' the aforementioned' Grade 12 required subjects' as of 'the second semester (February to June), Grade 11 marks will be used.' Applicants who are 21 years of age or older may apply via "mature student status" while those with postsecondary education may apply as transfer students. An applicant who meets the minimum requirements for admission, though, is not guaranteed acceptance to the Program. International students are welcome but those who originate from a country where English is not the official language must demonstrate that they possess sufficient English language ability to succeed in studies at the College. This may be done by either completing at least 'three consecutive English courses in a Canadian secondary school with a minimum grade of 60 per cent grade in all three courses' or a 'Humber English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program' or writing an acceptable English language proficiency examination. The latter includes the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL), Humber English Language Proficiency (HELP), International English Language Testing (IELTS), Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MELAB), or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
