Human Services - Correctional Services - Nova Scotia Community College

Combining theoretical and practical education, Nova Scotia Community College's Human Services in Correctional Services program is primarily designed to equip students with a 'broad-based skill set' allowing them to pursue careers, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in corrections, criminal justice, or related fields. Students will engage in an in-depth analysis of 'offender typologies to help' the 'understand the kinds of clients' they 'will encounter,' and be exposed to the 'active listening, keen observation and effective oral and written communication' in preparation 'to participate in the assessment, case planning and counseling of clients.' Moreover, students 'will learn to exercise good judgement in the use of force and the techniques to carry it out.'

The Program will also provide students the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations via a work experience placements in relevant settings 'under the supervision of trained correctional or related professionals.' Through the Placements, learners will further 'develop a better understanding of their career choice while they learn more about the conditions they will encounter as employees.' To be eligible for admission to the Correctional Services program, 'applicants must be 19 years of age' or older and possess 'a High School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and' have successfully completed 'Human Services - Year 1 courses or equivalent, including Law and Security Certificate.' Prospective students 'with a university degree in social sciences may immediately enter the second year of the Correctional Services program.'

Graduates of the Program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of criminal justice or related fields. Career-wise, graduates typically pursue various positions in corrections, criminal justice, law enforcement, and security in Canada. For example, graduates may find 'employment as correctional officers in federal and provincial adult correctional facilities, halfway houses and the provincial sheriffÆs department.' After gaining experience in the field, graduates may 'become probation officers, parole officers, halfway house supervisors, provincial native court workers and program coordinators at youth facilities' while some may 'take on greater case management responsibilities, and some pursue further training with the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.' Students should be aware that having a criminal record may make it difficult for them to attain employment in corrections and related fields.

Graduates can also pursue further education and training in corrections and related fields at various colleges, universities, and institutes across Canada. For instance, graduates of the Program can take advantage of on the College's existing transfer agreements allowing students to enter Athabasca University or Cape Breton University with advanced standing. Furthermore, graduates will 'all students have access to the educational programs and services of the Justice Learning Centre,' which is 'a joint venture of' the College 'and the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.'
