PROGRAM WEBSITE
Correctional Worker - Canadore College

Combining theoretical and practical education, Canadore College's 2-year Correctional Worker diploma exposes students to the knowledge and skills required 'for entry level and management positions in' various areas of corrections and related areas and agencies. The College ensures that the needs of employers in the field are met by developing and delivering the Program in partnership with personnel 'from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Correctional Service of Canada, Youth Justice Services, and other associated agencies.' Indeed, the Program has traditionally produced 'competent and professional recruits in the field of corrections for the provincial, federal and private sectors.'

In addition to theoretical education that spans the fields of Behaviour Sciences, Computers, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law, Politics, Physical Fitness, Psychology, and Sociology, the Program includes work experience placements that allow students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations in various correctional settings. In preparation for the Placement, students will take Placement Workshops that will teach students about Basic Emergency Response Team Techniques, Forensics, Hostage Taking and Negotiation, how to write Correctional Reports, Mechanical Restraining Techniques, Physical Management of Aggressive Behaviour, Rappelling, Resume and Interviewing Techniques, Self Defense, including Kick Boxing and Tai Kwon Do, Search and Rescue, Youth Crisis Intervention.

Students will also take institutional tours to such places as detention and correctional centres, federal institutions, jails, and young offender facilities. Prospective students should be aware that many employers in the field will require students undergo a police check 'can be obtained from the police department upon payment of a fee; all associated costs will be the responsibility of the student.' Moreover, while the College 'does not discriminate against anyone who has a criminal record,' individuals who have 'been in conflict with the law' may be limited in their 'field placement opportunities scheduled in the fourth semester.' Applicants with a criminal history should therefore 'discuss this issue with the' Program's coordinator.

Graduates of the Program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of criminal justice or related fields. Career-wise, graduates may be employed in such areas as crime prevention programs, federal and provincial penitentiaries, halfway houses, observation and detention centres, offender reconciliation programs, treatment centres, and special community initiatives. Graduates can be employed as case managers and/or workers, community service order supervisions, correctional bailiffs and/or officers, federal parole officers, halfway house supervisors, rehabilitation officers, and youth workers

Graduates may also further their respective training and education at various colleges, universities, and institutions often with advanced credit. For example, in accordance to the Criminal Justice Degree Completion Agreement between Canadore College and Nipissing University, students that graduate from the Correctional Worker diploma with a 3.5 or higher Grade Point Average 'can apply to the university and, if accepted, can complete' the latter's 4 -year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminal Justice in 2.5 years.

To be eligible for admission to the Correctional Worker program, applicants should possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) at or above the general level, or its equivalent, including courses from the College (C), University (U), University/ College (M), or Open (O) preparation levels as well as Grade 12 Compulsory English (ENG 4C or ENG 4U). Grade 12 Mathematics is recommended. Applicants who are 19 years of age or over and do not have an OSSD can apply under "mature student status;" the latter 'will be considered on the basis of their results on the College's Mature Student Test.' Furthermore, all applicants must complete a 'Health Centre Form including medical history, immunization record, Hepatitis B vaccination, and Tuberculosis (TB) test.'
