Fine Home Finishing - Northern Alberta Institute of Technology

The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology's Fine Home Finishing certificate is a 16-week program primarily designed for individuals with general experience in carpentry, millwork, or related areas who want to develop their skills in the area of interior home finishing. The Program combines technical and theoretical education on such topics as blueprint reading, business, estimating, and layout skills and the history of interior styles with practical training in woodworking. The latter will take place 'in well-equipped wood shops' using 'modern materials, tools and techniques.' Students will be provided with the fundamental knowledge and skills regarding the construction and installation of various interior finishes like baseboards, doors, trims, and staircases. Students will also have first-hand exposure to the Fine Home Finishing industry via visits to 'various material suppliers, molding manufacturers, cut-to-size operations, millwork companies and show homes.' The Program's major project will have students demonstrate 'their knowledge and skills' by styling and constructing an installation of their own choosing.

Career-wise, graduates typically pursue employment in the construction, woodworking, and wood products manufacturing, or related industries. For example, graduates may seek employment as carpenters specializing in home finishing. Job prospects in these industries are positive as they are experiencing growth, particularly in construction. Common employers include construction companies, furniture and cabinet manufacturers, repairers, retailers, and stores, general contractors, and residential and ICI sectors. Some graduates may prefer to become self-employed and/or to establish their own companies.

Graduates may also advance their training in the field such as through other specialized programs or an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning for a specified amount of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade, typically via the completion of an apprenticeship. The graduate of the Fine Home Finishing may qualify for advanced credits towards an apprenticeship.

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Moreover, individuals who earn journeyperson status may, after obtaining several years of experience beyond an apprenticeship, become educators, supervisors, and/or trainers of their respective trades.

To be eligible for the Fine Home Finishing program, applicants must have completed Grade 11 including Applied Math 20, Math 20 or 23, or Pure Math 20. Applicants will usually be required to also have a basic background or 'one year of professional experience' in the trade 'or a Millwork and Carpentry Certificate (or equivalent).'
