PROGRAM WEBSITE
Apprenticeship Prep - NorQuest College

NorQuest College's Apprenticeship Prep program is designed to provide students with a foundation of skills and knowledge in a trade to enable them to pursue further training as an apprentice or pursue entry level employment. The student will choose a trade of interest from the 50 designated trades available, and receive training with respect to that trade in topics like computer communications, employability, mathematics, science, and practical trades skills. The Program will prepare the learner 'to write the Apprenticeship Entrance Exam for levels 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5,' and will include 'a work experience component in' his/her trade of choice. To be eligible for admission, applicants must have completed Grade 8 English and Mathematics, have investigates career options, and undergo an admission interview.

Graduates will usually either seek entry level employment in their chosen trades or pursue further training via an apprenticeship. The latter is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work, in an indentured capacity, under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning, for a specific period of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade. The graduate of the Apprenticeship Prep program may qualify for advanced credits towards an apprenticeship.

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Individuals who attain journeyperson status may, after gaining several years of experience beyond the apprenticeship, become supervisors, trainers, and/or educators of their respective trades.
