PROGRAM WEBSITE Construction Renovation Techniques - Loyalist College The Loyalist College's 1-year Construction Renovation Techniques, Ontario College Certificate program is designed for students aspiring to careers in commercial and residential construction and renovation. Through a combination of technical and practical training, students will gain the knowledge and skills 'build a new home or renovate an old one.' Among the major topics to be covered are blueprint reading, carpentry essentials, including fine, interior, and exterior finishing, foundations, and framing, completing major renovation projects, construction principles, environmentally-safe practices, permit application process, producing sketches and 'computer-assisted designs using AutoCAD,' project cost and time estimating, selecting proper materials, trade-related legal aspects, such as by-laws, contracts and tenders, and the Ontario Building Code, and work safety. Moreover, the Program will enable learners to develop business, communications and customer service skills and 'develop valuable contacts with a network of local employers.' Career-wise, graduates may pursue employment in various aspects of residential construction and renovation either as an employee or through self-employment. For example, graduates may work for or become general or sub-contractors, new homebuilders, restoration contractors or find jobs in woodworking shops or 'in retail sales of building materials' like building centres, hardware stores, and lumber yards. Graduates may also further their education via an apprenticeship or other programs. In fact, graduates 'may be awarded advanced standing toward the in-school component of a carpentry apprenticeship.' Some may want to develop a specialization in a particular area of the trade such as drywalling, estimating, fine finish, renovation, or residential framing carpentry, insulation or exterior siding installation, project coordinating, or roofing. To be eligible for admission, applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with at least 30 credits or Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma (OSSGD) 'or equivalent with the majority of courses at the (C), (M) or (O) level, with Grade 12 English at the (C), (U) or (O) level.' Those 'who lack required subjects for admission' can complete 'a college preparatory course of study in order to meet the requirements.' Applicants who are 19 years of age or older 'as of the first day of classes in the year of admission, and who do not have OSSD or OSSGD standing' may apply under mature student status. However, mature applicants who have not taken the required subjects 'may be requested to write a diagnostic test. Mature applicants will be evaluated on a case by case basis 'basis and should consult the Admissions Office as early as possible to determine if pre-entry testing and/or college preparatory studies are required.' Moreover, mature applicants may be eligible for 'course credits or exemptions' based on 'life experience.'
