PROGRAM WEBSITE Mechanical and Construction Trades Preparation - Keyano College An apprenticeship is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning for a specified amount of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade. The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Moreover, journeypersons, after obtaining several years of experience beyond an apprenticeship, may become educators, supervisors, and/or trainers of their respective trades. Although to become an apprentice it is not necessary to complete a prior program, the advantage of doing so before seeking to be apprenticed is that the graduate often finds favour with potential employers because he/she has obtained the skills required to become immediately productive on the job and thus may find sponsorship easier to come by. Moreover, applicants who possess previous training and/or work experience in the trade may be eligible to receive time credits towards the apprenticeship program and/or may also be able to challenge its technical training portion or the certification examination. Keyano College's Mechanical and Construction Trades Preparation (MCTP) certificate program, delivered at the Clearwater Campus, prepares students to enter an apprenticeship by providing them with 'entry-level industry training and skill development for employment in apprenticeship trades.' The Program is 24-weeks in duration including 'multiple trade preparation, skill development and employability skills training' with the last 6 weeks being 'a work experience placement in industry' in a trade chosen by the student. Students will be 'issued credentials for work experience by Apprenticeship and Industry Training and assume full apprentice workload duties under supervision of a journeyman.' Furthermore, the Program will stress workplace safety including training in First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information system (WHMIS). To graduate, students must attain 'a passing mark of 50% in each course and an overall average of 60%.' Students must also conform to the 'industry standards established for apprenticeship technical training regarding attendance and punctuality.' Graduates will be awarded 'a program certificate, transcript, and, for employment purposes, an industry-based job performance evaluation from their work experience placement' and will be able to seek employment and/or an apprenticeship in a variety of trades such carpentry. To be eligible for the Program, applicants must be 18 years of age or over, have completed Grade 10 Academic Proficiency, and write an test 'for aptitude and academic ability.' To apply, applicants must complete and submit a College application, MTCP applicant profile, and Keyano College Health Questionnaire, and be subject to an interview.
