Intro to Trades - College of the Rockies

Offered at the College of the Rockies' Invermere Campus, the Introduction to Trades is a 10-week program exposing students to the Automotive, Basic Welding, Building, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, and Timber Framing trades. Students will be given a combination of technical and practical training including 'instruction on basic tools and safety' and work experience on various projects. The program includes multiple certificates including Basic Rigging and Forklift Training, First Aid, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Graduates will be prepared to pursue basic employment in the aforementioned trades; in particular the program will provide students with the foundation upon which to pursue further training in a specific trade through an apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work, in an indentured capacity, under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade, typically via the completion of an apprenticeship. The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Graduates of the Introduction to Trades program may qualify for advanced credits towards an apprenticeship.

To be eligible for the Intro to Trades program, applicants must have completed Grade 10, or equivalent, or complete a 'Completion of College Assessment to Determine Eligibility.' The College, however, prefers that applicants have graduated secondary school with a C grade or higher in English 11 and Math 11, or Intro to Math 11, or ABE Advanced Certification with Math 80. Moreover, in addition to basic school materials like binders, paper, pencils, pens, applicants accepted to the Program must have their own calculator, safety glasses, steel-toed work boots or shoes, tape measure, and work clothes, such as coveralls.
