Trades Access - Aurora College

Aurora College's 20- to 26- week Trades Access Program is designed to prepare learners 'for entry into trades related programs' and provide them with 'a foundation in physical science.' The Program is flexible in order to allow its 4 core courses to be supplemented by elective classes that enable the student to customize his/her learning experience to suit his/her career goals, interests, and needs. For example, a student may further his/her skills in such diverse subjects as Communication Skills, Computers, Driver's Education, English, First Aid, Mathematics, Occupational Health and Safety, and Science.

The Program is intended as a general 'introduction to the working industry' and not as a means to gain employment or proficiency in any particular craft or industry. However, the student will be afforded the required 'information, guidance, and incentives to pursue the trade of his/her choice further,' primarily via an apprenticeship. Moreover, students attaining 65 percent or higher on the Trades Entrance examination, which is administered by the Department of Education, Culture and Employment of the Government of the Northwest Territories following the completion of the Program's courses, and who are employed in their chosen trade are immediately eligible to enter into an apprenticeship in that trade. Individuals must be employed in their trade before an apprenticeship can be commenced. Time credits earned during the Program and/or via employment, if any, are eligible to be applied towards the total required to complete the apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning for a specified amount of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade..

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Moreover, persons who attain journeyperson status may, after accruing several years of experience beyond the apprenticeship, become supervisors, trainers, and/or educators of their respective trades.

To be admitted to the Trades Access Program, applicants should have completed 'Grade 8/9 or ABE math 120 and English 130.' Upgrading courses must be taken by applicants that demonstrate mathematics, reading, writing skills below the aforementioned levels before being eligible for admission to the Program. Furthermore, applicants must successfully complete all required Aurora College English and Mathematics Assessment tests and applicants will typically be required to submit 3 'letters of reference from former employers of community groups and a letter of intent.'
