Profile of Career College/Trade School
The Silva Bay Shipyard School’s boat building courses are registered and certified by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency of British Columbia, and are recognized by the boat building industry. The school is a not for profit, post secondary school teaching boat construction. The school offers three full-time, certified courses. Students can enroll for these independently or consecutively over a period of one year. The courses are Introduction to Marine Woodworking, Wooden Boat building, and Ships Cabinetry. Several short courses are also offered. The boat building class builds 4 boats during the 6-month duration of the boat-building course. The 4-month ships cabinetry course teaches construction of boat interior joinery, design and construction of individual tool chests and the ongoing completion of the school’s cruising yacht. A month-long introductory course is offered twice a year before the full time certified courses. Students who enroll for the Wooden Boat building and Ships Cabinetry must have completed the Introduction to Marine Woodworking or have equivalent skills. Courses are comprised of theory, project work and field trips, with guest lectures. Based on their performance and the instructor’s assessment of their course work and woodworking projects, students are awarded a certificate for the full time courses they complete successfully. Silva Bay Shipyard School plans to introduce more full time courses like restoration, blacksmithing, and sail making in the near future.
