A career in interior design is one of the most exciting and creatively challenging careers on the market today. Interior design has always been a demanding field and now, with the advent of new technology and the need to think more creatively, interior decorating and design has become a grueling but fulfilling career option for many. Many clients require interior decorators to be able to work with constrained space limitations or in an environmentally friendly setting. These challenges call for a great deal of creative thinking from professional interior decorators. North American interior decoration and design is unique in that it takes into consideration the elements of lighting and weather that are exclusive to this landscape. Interior decorators must be able to provide design options which are suited to their clients needs and provide comfortable, aesthetically pleasing places to live and work. Interior decoration and design programs will cover subjects like techniques in choosing the right materials as well as the right colors, given the functionality of space and its requirements. Students will learn how elements such as lighting, the walls and the ceiling work together to create an effect. Students also learn about coordinating spaces using furnishings, curtains, textiles and cloth. They will also be taken on a number of field trips to study different architectural designs and concepts. They will also learn about the basics of drafting, building technology and architectural design as well as the use of software like AutoCAD, 3D Home Architect and Sierra Home Architect. Students will begin to learn the practical applications of interior decoration by working first on single rooms, then residential buildings and finally commercial structures. Programs will also teach them a number of business skills including how to set up a business as well as laws and safety measures connected with the decorating business.
