A Resident Care Aide program is offered from the Pacific Coast Community College, which is owned and operated by the BC Resident Care Aide, Inc. The program started in 2002; and since then, it has had more than 450 graduates. Upon completion graduates receive CPR/First Aid, Food Safe, and WHMIS certification. A new class starts every four weeks. The Resident Care Aide Certificate program is a 19-week program, which includes classroom, home study, and practicum. The program is designed to train and educate students in the following areas: Body Mechanics, Assisting the Client to Maintain Maximum Function, Communication and Health Care System, Delegated Tasks and Administration of Medication, Illness in the Aging Population, and Job Search. The practicum part is conducted in extended and intermediate care facilities, group home, and in a child care facility. The clinical practicum is conducted under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The size of a practicum group is around 8 students. The final practicum is conducted under the supervision of a Resident Care Aide staff. The clinical practicum is of 112 hours, group home and child care practicum are of 52 hours each, and the final practicum is of 116 hours. Graduates find employment in the following facilities: intermediate and extended care facilities, assisted living, acute care hospitals, home support for children, adults and families, and rehabilitation facilities. Job placement assistance is provided to graduates. The program itself has a course in Job Search.
